Biography
Apostolis Karabairis, born in 1982, has got an academic background in area studies (Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies) and conducted field research in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His professional career started as a resident researcher in two Greek think tanks in Athens, EKEM and ELIAMEP. In 2012 he moved to civic activism by being one of the founding members of Thessaloniki Pride. He served as its office director from 2014 up until 2017, when EuroPride 2020 was allocated to Thessaloniki and consequently he switched to its organisational board. He remains in this function until today, as Thessaloniki is rescheduled to host the 2024 EuroPride, after the cancellation of 2020, due to the pandemic. Apostolis is also active at the local level, being a member of the steering board of Thessaloniki’s civil society organisations network (thessΔίκτυο), as well as at regional level by promoting the initiative for a Balkan Pride. Apart from LGBTI activism, he has worked with the pedagogical-artistic youth group “Schedia stin poli” for a 3-year project (2019-2022) on inclusive education.
